Literacy through Opera Program

Tulsa Opera proudly began a new educational program during the 2007-2008 season. Literacy through Opera is a multi-media program designed to enhance student reading in conjunction with an introduction to opera music. Students will read a grade appropriate children’s book within the classroom. The book is based upon an operatic or musical story. Within the reading sessions students will listen to a small number of musical excerpts based upon the content of the story, and will learn how composers enhance classic stories by setting the words to music.

Literacy through Opera is geared for grades K-5. Each session will last one class period. Sessions are held in music classes and will be conducted by Tulsa Opera Education Staff or volunteer over several days to ensure that every student participates in the reading. Each school will receive approximately six different presentations in the course of the school year. Participating schools, along with the public library branch closest to participating schools, will each receive one copy of the book for the school and library branch collections. This will allow students to check the book out to share with their friends and family members.
